The MindUP™ Curriculum
MindUP™ includes fifteen lessons divided across four units:
I. Quieting the Mind: Sharpening the Focus - students learn how their brains work and are introduced to the concept of mindful focused awareness.
II. Our Senses - students practice focusing their awareness by learning to listen, see, smell, taste, and move in a mindful way.
III. Practical Applications: Building Blocks to Critical Thinking and Creative Problem-Solving - students learn perspective taking skills, optimistic vs. pessimistic points of view, and how to savor happy experiences.
IV. Mindful of Ourselves in the World – students learn about gratitude, acts of kindness, and community service.
Each component of the program builds upon skills learned in the preceding units and lessons. Children move through activities focusing on internal experience (senses), followed by cognitive experience (thoughts and feelings), culminating in students’ focus on themselves in relation to others (actions) via acts of kindness and community service learning.
A series of extension activities support the fifteen core MindUP™ lessons. The MindUP™ lesson extension activities are short lesson plans (averaging 15 minutes) that extend the learning from each corresponding lesson. The MindUP™ lesson extensions are linked to various areas of academic and social and emotional learning.
