Become a MindUp School

Teachers and school leaders in hundreds of schools are currently implementing MindUP™ throughout North America. A school that demonstrates sustained enthusiasm and fidelity to the MindUP™ program and fulfills various criteria can become a MindUP™ School or MindUP™ Select School.

After deciding to adopt MindUP™ and submitting a “School Profile” (PDF) and Mindful movement“School’s Letter of Agreement,” The Hawn Foundation’s Director of Educational Programs and Initiatives reviews these documents and discusses other pertinent issues with school leaders. An on-site Teacher Training Workshop may then be scheduled. Continuous dialogue between a school and The Hawn Foundation prior to on-site training ensures that all workshops activities are coordinated with the school and it is prepared well in advance to engage fully in training. Additionally, a school is expected to purchase MindUP™ books for each teacher and staff member from Scholastic, Inc. prior to an on-site Teacher Training Workshop.

School leaders, in consultation with faculty, are asked to develop and submit a two-year strategic sustainability plan for MindUP™ and designate one or two staff members as MindUP™ School Coordinators.

MindUP™ Schools

After a full-day MindUP™ Teacher Training Workshop, a school then sustains the program for a year. MindUP™ must be implemented throughout the school, and its skills and principles integrated into teachers' regular curriculum. A MindUP™ consultant maintains contact with the school to ensure fidelity to the program and to help the school in ways deemed important to both school leaders and the consultant.

A Hawn Foundation consultant then visits the school and conducts an on-site review, which includes an analysis of pre- and post-program evaluation measures found in the MindUP™ Evaluation Toolkit. These easy-to-administer student and teacher self-reports and fidelity and efficacy surveys exhibit data that is for the sole use of the Foundation and school.

Once these steps are taken, a school may apply to The Hawn Foundation for Certification as a MindUP™ School. If successful, a school may renew its certification every three years, pending an off-site view.

Schools electing to become a MindUP™ Select School will also be invited to participate in university-affiliated research projects.

After a year, the Director of Educational Programs and Initiatives will visit the school and conduct an on-site review.

A MindUP™ Select School also takes an active role in the Foundation’s efforts to disseminate the MindUP™ program to other schools.

A school may apply to The Hawn Foundation for provisional certification as a MindUP™ Select School. A MindUP™ Select School with provisional certification is then reviewed after the second year, and if successful obtains full certification as a MindUP Select School. Each school undergoes an off-site review every third year to maintain certification.
