Become a MindUP Trainer
The Hawn Foundation encourages all skilled, conscientious, dynamic educators with experience implementing MindUP™ in their own classrooms and who ascribe to our mission to apply to become a MindUP™ trainer. The broad responsibilities of our MindUP™ trainers are simple, yet take considerable skill and dedication. In addition to leading MindUP™ Workshops and mentoring schools implementing the program, a trainer must commit to
- communicating the vision of The Hawn Foundation;

- welcoming teachers who participate in MindUP™ workshops to be a part of the vision;
- creating a sense of excitement and commitment within a mindful learning environment
- equipping children with the social and emotional skills in order to lead smarter, healthier, and happier lives through the teachers they help train.
We require that all trainers are experienced classroom teachers who have implemented and practiced MindUP™ with students for at least one year. All MindUP™ trainers desiring to deliver on-site teacher training workshops are required to submit and/or complete the following requirements:
- Complete successfully the MindUP Regional Workshop sponsored by The Hawn Foundation.
- Obtain a written recommendation from your school’s MindUP Coordinator, Regional Associate Director, or The Hawn Foundation’s Director of Educational Programming and Initiatives.
- Submit a Hawn Foundation Trainer Employment Application.
- Solicit two confidential letters of reference from professional colleagues to be submitted directly to the Director of Educational Programming and Initiatives.
- Submit a Response Paper on topics relating to SEL, brain-based teaching, and the MindUP™ program to the Director of Educational Programs and Initiatives.
- Accompany and support a Senior MindUP™ Trainer on at least two MindUP™ Teacher Training Workshops. As co-trainer, the Senior Trainer will submit a formative evaluation of the your work as a MindUP™ trainer.
- Conduct a MindUP™ Teacher Training Workshop as the lead trainer according to the guidelines set out in this MindUP™ Trainer’s Handbook, and undergo a summative evaluation by the Senior Trainer as co-trainer.
- Study the scholarly books and articles listed among the “MindUP™ Essential Reading List.”
- Remain current in the fields of mindful education and social/emotional learning through diligent study and professional development.
- Submit the required federal Treasury Department forms (W-9 and I-9) as well as Trainer General Agreement, Confidentiality Agreement, and Media Release.
All official forms must be sent digitally to the Director of Educational Programs and Initiatives prior to any engagement.
To retain The Hawn Foundation’s certification as a trainer, you must participate in at least one Teacher Training Workshop annually. Regional
Centers coordinate the activities of MindUP™ trainers under the guidance of the Director of Educational Programs and Iniaitives.
MindUP™ trainers are compensated for workshop training sessions outside of their own school as assigned to them by the Director of Educational Programs and Initiatives.
